What is silicone gel sheeting?

A silicone gel sheet is a material that’s used to reduce the appearance of a scar from a burn, a cut, or some other skin injury. It’s an adhesive that applies gentle, constant pressure to help flatten or soften scar tissue.

Why is it used?

The sheeting may be suggested by a doctor if your child is at risk for hypertrophic scarring. This is an overgrowth of scar tissue that has a raised appearance. It may be red, pink, or purple. It may get worse without treatment.

How do you use silicone gel sheeting for children?

Wash the area around your child’s scar with soap and water to remove any oil or lotion. Then apply the silicone gel sheeting as directed by your doctor. Follow directions for how long to leave it on the scar. The sheet can be held in place with a wrap or a compression sock.

Make sure to rinse or wash the gel sheet after each use. Air-dry and store the gel sheet sticky side down on the included plastic backing.

Stop using the gel sheeting if your child has any redness, itching, rash, or other skin irritation. Do not put the gel sheeting over an open wound. Contact your doctor with any questions or concerns.
